Like the musical lovechild of Billy Jenkins, John Zorn and Frank Zappa, MOPDTK are spunky satirists looking to provide an antidote to the kind of contemporary jazz artists that take themselves too seriously. They reached a conceptual John Cage-like high or low – depending on if you worked out what they were up to, if anything – covering verbatim Miles' classic Kind of Blue. Mauch Chunk in 2015 was a return to leader-bassist Moppa Elliott originals featuring his new extended septet that's also featured here on Loafer's Hollow. Their ninth studio album to date sticks with Elliot's compositions but heads back to jazz police baiting and the music on 2014's Red Hot with its slightly deranged, feral take on pre-war ‘hot’ swing and New Orleans-flavoured instrumentals. It's given an extra raucous fist of brass with the input of the excellent Sex Mobster Steven Bernstein on muted/slide trumpet and Dave Taylor – who has a studio session CV to die for – on bass trombone.
