London-based Zoe Rahman won last year’s MOBO Jazz award following her piano trio recording Kindred Spirits. Here she takes on a shared group role as the ‘z’ in the Moz trio, alongside a Gothenburg-based husband-and-wife rhythm section of electric bassist Owe Almgren and drummer Martina Almgren, (the leader of Oh Yeah Orchestra with saxophonist Laura McDonald that combined Swedish and Scottish musicians). The trio is perhaps more reflective, patient, and less full-on than Rahman’s own piano trio, and there are also few signs of a direct influence from her Bengali heritage that’s been a highlight of her music of late. But the music has much of Rahman’s percussive bite and her effusive, high-spirited character boils over to dominate the recording. The dramatic, yet never schmaltzy pileup of rich chord voicings, the McCoy Tyner-like orchestral thrust and something of her mentor JoAnne Brackeen’s restless imagination are all here. But it’s no one-woman show and a strong set of originals from all three musicians and acute sensitivity in the group’s interaction mark out this successful collaboration.
