The back story to this band is that non-playing conductor Klüver was a classical clarinettist who, because of his love of jazz big bands, organised one in 1977 that pays its sidemen well, thanks to funds from the Danish state and the town of Aarhus. And they have obtained work by inviting a long series of guest stars, predominantly American, to appear with them, of whom Miller is only the latest – arrangers Harris and Mackrel are earlier collaborators, and here they use six of Mulgrew's compositions including ‘Thinkin’ Out Loud' and the title track. On this live gig, the band and soloists (the 10 members listed above) set an impressively high standard, and only the drum solo by Lund (also a collaborator of Stefano Bollani) seems anti-climactic, recording-wise. Though Miller has space on every track, he is also part of the ensemble performance and clearly enjoys these big-band renditions of his material. And now, sadly, Klüver himself has apparently retired, so let's hope the band – and the funds – continue in place.
