A welcome reminder of the talent of Miller, gone these 10 years already, and an amplification of our previous knowledge. From first sighting of him filling the piano chair in Mercer Ellington’s continuation of his father’s band (Kenny Garrett was also in the personnel of their 1977 tour), he was obviously someone to look out for. But his talent for playing without a rhythm section was largely hidden until the duo album with Roy Hargrove, reviewed in Jazzwise 264.
This live recital sees him getting into his stride from the off, with little that directly alludes to ‘stride piano’ but displaying an impressive left-hand stretch, capable both of frequent four-note chords and a full polyrhythmic backing on Jobim’s ‘O Grande Amor’. The right-hand lines include everything from Powell-influenced bebop (on the 1947 ‘Milestones’) to occasional hints of Tatum and even Erroll Garner on ‘Misty’. The mix of standards and a couple of Gillespie numbers is contrasted with the nearly 15-minute ‘Excursions In Blue’, which is best described as a quick-fire medley of many different piano-blues styles, from country to funk and in a variety of keys. You need to hear it, though.
