Mumpbeak, down to that silly name, fit squarely into the RareNoise grab bag: anyone familiar and beloved of Brit progrock of the 1970s/80s will feel at home with this evocation of all things Crimson and Gentle Giant. The recording is actually a tour de force for Powell whose clavinet and FX summon the spirits of not keyboardists but guitarists: ‘Monocle’ is an echo-dripping meditation of Holdsworthian scale, ‘Biscuit’ thumps along with a Crims like creep, while ‘Piehole’ finds Blumenkrantz re-born as John Wetton (there's a thought). It's all good fun, with Mastelotto and Levin lending crunch and bottom, not to mention some prog authenticity. Laswell's production keeps us aware of how much this is a studio creation, but hey, why not? Just how many hours did Yes stay handcuffed in their sound booths? What they do, Mumpbeak and Powell in particular do well. But someone may want to remind them that 21st Century Schizoid Man is ageing rapidly.
