Liam Noble is known for playing piano in his own groups, in an avant-garde setting with saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, and in more straight ahead contexts with the likes of Bobby Wellins – but recently he’s begun to develop an interest in the liberating potential of electronic keyboards. Here, his imaginative use of thickly ring-modulated tones, Moog-ish curlicues and twittering Fender Rhodes lifts what might have been a perfectly competent free jazz trio into the kind of astral reaches frequently visited by Supersilent’s Ståle Storløkken – an aesthetic that grabs hold of Sun Ra’s twinkling vapour trails in order to achieve lift-off. Saxophonist Rachel Musson, too, is exploring new territory, leaving behind the sensitively restrained compositions of her 2011 debut, Flight-Line, for the weightlessness of free improvisation, and unveiling an easy facility with precise multiphonics and spontaneous melodicism in the process. Mark Sanders displays the dancing versatility and muzzled energy that’s made him one of the UK’s top free drummers. Superior out-sounds, for sure.
