If you’ve not heard of Myra Brownbridge, it’s because she’s spent her career so far working with better-known headliners - touring Germany with Zara McFarlane, playing with the BBC Concert Orchestra, Tomorrow’s Warriors, NYJO and the Nu Civilisation Orchestra. This, then, is her first outing as leader with an album apparently inspired by the writings of Virginia Woolf – hence the title.
The long ballad ‘As Dreams Are Made’ features Tony Kofi, whose sheer class immediately shines through, as the track begins as a duet for alto and bass until the remaining instruments join in one by one, ending with a rippling coda from Ollendorff.
The overall mood of the album is relaxed and sunny – as on the perky samba ‘The Joy of Being’ – with a nicely varied palette of styles. ‘Icarus’, a waltz, starts with a Metheny-like solo guitar passage, before Brownridge comes in with her first and last vocal of the album. Considering what a good voice she has, it would have been nice to hear more from her, both as a singer and as a bass player, where she stays in the background.
Myra Brownbridge is an accomplished writer, well served by her fellow musicians, who leave each other plenty of space, while Garford and Ollendorff’s soloing is fluent and expressive.
