To recap: when I reviewed the first volume of this reissue in Jazzwise's August 2017 issue I surprised myself by failing to warm to an album that I had admired enormously when I reviewed an earlier reissue back in 2001. Andy Hamilton positions Melford as a “polystylist” in his sleeve note, which is fair comment. The opening track, ‘Breaking Light’, has something of the clean-cut, bureaucratic lyricism of Keith Jarrett while, at the other end of the spectrum, her closing piece, ‘Live Jump’ serves up runaway clusters of which Don Pullen would have been proud – before unleashing the full Cecil Taylor. Melford also throws in a stampeding blues and some ambient balladry, but the lack of mediation between all these styles means everything's here – but there is no here.
