Franco-Syrian, Victoire du Jazz-nominated composer and flautist Naïssim Jalal and her new quartet featuring long established double-bassist Claude Tchamitchian and ever-questing cellist Clément Petit (Blick Bassy), gift us a series of hymns – or prayers and offerings – in tribute to rivers and forests, the wind and the moon and other forces of nature. Jalal has form in merging European and Arab classical music, a penchant for experimentation seen in nods to everything from hip-hop to funk to West African traditions, and a predilection for fierce, impassioned protest music evidenced by her ensemble Rhythms of Resistance.

Inspired, however, by her work as musician-in-residence at a Parisian hospital, Jalal looks to the soothing properties traditionally associated with the flute, conjuring a variety of sounds – by adjusting tone, changing colour, applying vibrato – that in combination with strings and drums feel liberating, replenishing and very often beautiful. More trance-based sound healing than jazz, Healing Rituals nonetheless has an improvisatory spirit that lends the work an authentic feel, and a freeform chamber aesthetic that gives these imaginary age-old animist rituals a modern twist. Given the state of the climate, and even the state of our inner worlds, Healing Rituals feels important, even transformative.
