Walden first grabbed attention when replacing Cobham in the Mahavishnu Orchestra. This three- for-one package reflects those curious days with Walden draped in white as an acolyte of Sri Chinmoy as indeed was John MacLaughlin and Carlos (Devadip) Santana who features here briefly. Garden Of Love Light reeks with distorted guitars, most notably from Ray Gomez who will live forever thanks to his pyrotechnics on Stanley Clarke’s ‘School Days’. With Walden, Gomez sits atop some Gibbs-directed strings and the whole puff adds up to a furiously loud nothingness, complemented by the daftest vox you could flounder over. By the time of Awakening most of the ‘jazz rock’ element has been stripped out and Walden, looking forward to his days as a lucrative R&B/pop producer, is happy to trawl through a mass of disco/funk formats that chortle away merrily and utterly fatuously. But for a moment or two Gomez burned bright.
