Drawing on influences from soul, gospel and jazz, this latest album from MOBO nominated vocalist Natalie Williams sees her unveiling a smart new writing partnership with pianist Tom Cawley and channeling the work of classic singer-songwriters such as Stevie Wonder, James Taylor and Carole King. The first single from the album, ‘Little Girl’, captures the Williams/Cawley sound at its most joyously direct. Straining ever higher through a succession of key changes, ‘Where You Are’ is a touching paean to the singer's late grandmother, while the opening riff of the smooth-as-marble ‘For The Next Time’ evokes the great Steely Dan. Sounding like it could have been a hidden track from Tapestry, ‘Make It Better’ features one of several beautifully crafted middle-eights. The album reaches its high-water mark with ‘Tell Me Do’, an already classic sounding song with a seductive groove and instantly memorable chorus hook (great soloing here from guitarist Al Cherry). The final gospel blast of ‘Gone At Last’ casts a warm glow over the whole recording.
