Cline is the most chameleon-like of guitarists: he can rock it with Wilco or The Flaming Lips; or as be as out as your cat as in last year’s gigs with Hedvig Mollestad. He can abuse his Jazzmaster with an egg whisk one moment, then lay down the ravishing vibes of his Blue Note debut Lovers.
Consentrik Quartet is his newest project, propelled principally by Laubrock’s restless sax. With Rainey, Mr Laubrock, on drums, there’s a natural intimacy at the heart of the band that belies their ‘newness’. This is already a worldly-wise post-bop line up.
Laubrock’s intensity brings out more of Cline’s jazz heart. ‘The Bag’ for example, finds the duo doubling on a racy bop chase, while Rainey grows increasingly outrageous until Cline nudges back in with a fierce run coloured with electronics. We’re in the Lo/Sco realm here, though not at such a grand and consistent level.
‘Allende’ features an outstanding Laubrock lament but is followed by a dramatic mood change with ‘House of Steam’. This finds Laubrock in a higher register, trading licks with Cline to build a mesmerising vortex of sound.
It would be satisfying if this was a prolonged project for the guitarist. It brings Cline the composer more into focus, while filing off some of his more eccentric playing edges.
