Here's a project with no side to it. Just straight-ahead, brass rich jazz-rock. The likes of Bill Evans and Mike Stern are in their element here, laying down chorus after chorus of rambunctious, funksome fun. Essentially Levinovsky and Butman have shoehorned a rock-edged band (the Weckl/Kennedy/Stern nexus) into the beefy noise of a jazz orchestra and let them run riot. Subtle it ain't, but it makes great driving music, especially on the big noised title track. ‘Loneliness’, as the name suggests, crashes back down through the gears, while ‘Young Beauty’ is positively lyrical by the standards of this release. But it's the epically scaled numbers that catch the ear, like the suitably biblical ‘Exodus’, with Stern needing little encouragement to burn hard. Brecker, as ever, brings a touch of class, and it's a shame there's not more of him, though his contribution to ‘Procession’ is telling. Play it loud, though you may not play it more than once.
