Swiss-born Meier keeps making music, keeps recording, keeps putting it out there: what else can you expect from a questing musician? Kismet finds Meier in the more acoustic sound world he explored on From Istanbul to Ceuto with a Smile. That said, the slinky groover ‘Not For Me’, has that Sco skunk funk feel. But the fusion vibe from that track is the exception not the rule as Meier principally sticks to his nylon stringed guitar and his signature glissentar.
Strictly speaking this is Meier’s second release with the ‘trio’, following 2009’s Breeze. But although there is an intimate sound, as you’d expect from a smaller setting, the ‘trio’ definition is loose: Garcia is an ever present, his percussion weaving tight with Lowe, while Ball and Gregor-Smith from Meier’s Eclectica! decorate the glowing dark of ‘Reflection’. The Turkish element in Meier’s music is further deepened by Erdogan’s fleet finger-work on ‘Horizon’ and the title track.
But it is Meier’s unique blend of eastern and jazz sounds that constantly surprises, especially on originals like ‘October in Ankara’, an old fave re-recorded. There is something optimistic and generous in Meier’s playing, whether he’s highlighting the gypsy roots of ‘Nuages’ or adding Spanish flavours and handclaps to ‘Giant Steps’. Harry Lime was wrong. Switzerland has given us far more than the cuckoo clock.
