After the melancholy delicacies of his excellent The Moon, The Stars and You project, Landgren returns to his beloved funk and teams up with old pals and Crusaders legends Joe Sample and Wilton Felder. Sadly, their contribution is minimal: Felder burns through the dance floor stomper ‘Mr Masumoto’, while Sample colours the organ driven groove on ‘Green Beans’. It’s of course all splendidly played, with that lovely clean ACT sound, but the gripes remain: Landgren’s vocals, so evocative on The Moon, The Stars and You, remain thin for this material, and, bizarrely, the star quality of his raunchy trombone is decidedly downplayed on this recording; the man’s too modest! Landgren fans will love it but you have to ask after eight of these fun funk outings whether there’s much more funk ore to extract.
