Aside from a Christmas album that she released in 2013, Time Traveler is vocalist Nnenna Freelon's first studio recording in more than a decade and her first with Origin Records. In a similar way to her 2010 album, Homefree, the new collection brings together songs that have a particular resonance for the singer. But there's an extra poignancy here – the album represents a heartfelt love letter to her late husband and soulmate, Philip Freelon, with each song being of special significance to the couple and their journey together. This is an album into which time, care and love has been poured, one in which life's joys and sorrows are expressed in the most soulful way imaginable. In addition to a medley of classic Marvin Gaye songs (‘If This World Were Mine/Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing/Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’), there's a remarkable reimagining of singer-songwriter Jim Croce's 1973 hit ‘Time In A Bottle’, and a nod to Philly soul with ‘You Make Me Feel Brand New’ in which Freelon's incredible vocal is enveloped by co-arranger Keith Ganz's acoustic guitar. While all of the material is required listening, Freelon's self-penned ‘Just You’ deserves to be singled out – a song whose hymnic simplicity and emotional directness goes straight to the heart.
