Having garnered a solid fan base in the past five years by way of two excellent releases, Elle and At The Back Of Beyond, Rotterdam-based Cameroonian vocalist, composer and producer Rosie consolidates her status as ‘artist deserving wider attention’ with this latest album. To the jazz-inflected soul base of the previous work, which also had a subtle shading of rock, is added a more explicitly African resonance by way of teasing 6/8 rhythms and shimmering kora as well as understated but effective percussion. But it is the presence of two very expressive improvisers, flautist Ronald Snjiders (of Black Straight Music cult status), and trumpeter Eric Vloeimans, that proves to be the major trump card of the set. Their appearance on ‘Pas De Retour’ and ‘I'm Loved’, respectively, brings a layer of finesse to a collection of songs whose clear, well-mapped melodic content is matched by the intelligence of its lyrics. She could, should, and hopefully will be bigger.
