Nile Rodgers is here, and Afrobeat scion Seun Kuti. Accra-born seer KOG brings his highlife stylings; Malian diva Mamani Keita sees us out with her high, husky Bamana-language lyrics. The calibre of such guests is testament to the clout and prestige of nine-piece powerhouse Nubiyan Twist, whose fourth album this is, as it is that of producer/guitarist Tom Excell, who showcases the band’s inventiveness, range, and festival-hewn tightness with aplomb.

Whatever the genre - soul or jazz, hip hop or grime - the band maintain their groove and social conscience, as hands-in-the-air joyful as they are cathartic and righteous. Opener ‘Battle Isn’t Over’ is a horn-driven declaration of intent and content fronted by Sheffield-based vocalist Aziza Jaye, a new addition to the team, before we’re on to the mighty likes of Rodgers’ disco-tastic banger ‘Lights Out’, Kuti’s fiercely contained ‘Carry Me’ and Glaswegian post-jazz fusionists corto.alto throwing the jazz-kitchen sink into ‘You Don’t Know Me’, through which Jaye’s voice soars over a glorious cacophony of honeyed horns and mashed up beats. Not that Nubiyan Twist can’t go it alone: the five tracks without guests are as dynamic as the five tracks with features, as solos are passed around, chops are flexed and - as on the title track - the party flame burns brighter than ever. Scorching stuff.
