This CD was originally written in the context of a musical score for a series of four abstract experimental films and it’s a good idea to download the films from the label Edition records, once you have the CD. It’s presented here as a jazz recording for a review column in a ‘jazz magazine’ not only due to Edition’s credible jazz roster but more so because of Oddarrang’s Finnish leader Olavi Louhivuori’s stint as a sideman for Polish trumpet legend Tomasz Stańko, recording the ECM album Dark Eyes in 2009. This is nevertheless a recording closer to the kind of Nordic ambient post-rock of a band such as Sigur Rós but with the kind of minimalistic jazz improv sensibilities that point to the UK’s Cinematic Orchestra, a major influence of Louhivouri’s. The melodies are strong and folkily graceful: sad, haunting with instrumentation combining the gentler tones of cello and trombone with shimmering, Bill Frisell-like guitar twangs, but also with some thrilling group crescendos that can turn tenderly translucent pulsating grooves into explosive rock-fired beats. A wider audience beckons for Oddarrang’s intelligent and highly mesmerising cinematic dreamscapes.
