The seven originals on Olegario Diaz's fourth SteepleChase release reference the Venezuelan-born pianist/composer's key inspirations. ‘Grolnick’, named after late US pianist Don, signposts a major influence on the core Diaz aesthetic while the sinewy bossa ‘Samba Ghandi’ flags up Diaz's philosophical allegiances. The samba inflected ‘Broadway & 96th’ is named after the NYC location of a regular early career gig and the spritely swing of ‘Run Tino Run’ celebrates his recently deceased canine companion. Two standards, both played as mid-tempo swingers, round out a solid latin-tinged post-bop modern jazz set. As one would expect from someone currently earning a crust writing jingles, the original compositions are melodic and focused. Sipiagin and Franceschini are equally solid as a sax and trumpet frontline. Franseschini crosses the influences of Mike Brecker and Joe Lovano without adding much to either so it is Sipiagin who delivers the sparkle. His attention-grabbing phrasing opens the album and delivers high hopes which are not quite realised. James Genus sounds great on double-bass, whether soloing or in support, and Nate Smith is smoothly efficient on drums, creating a nice spring and bounce to every track.
