A pairing of musical greats that makes perfect sense – indeed, why did it take them so long this time? – this lovely joint project comes 14 years after their last album and continues smoothly from where they left off. Despite her 81 years the Buena Vista's “fiancé of filin” Omara Portuondo remains in fine if thin voice; all those lucky enough to catch the 69-year-old Chucho Valdes during his brief residency at Ronnie's in April will know that he's still firing on all four jazz cylinders. This selection of Cuban and Latin American classics (and a Rachmaninov) sees the singer and pianist oh-so-elegantly stripped down: with its precise phrasing and almost palpable emotion opener ‘Noche Cubana’ is a lovely solo reminder of why Portuondo remains so beloved at home and abroad (Valdes bookends with the same track at the end). Wynton Marsalis lends subtle colours to ‘Esta Tarde Vi Llover’ – but this is Omara and Chucho all the way.
