An Italian big band name for a small group with no Italians. Finnish pianist Kari Ikonen, French bassist Sébastien Boisseau and two Belgians, saxophonist Manuel Hermia and drummer Teun Verbruggen are nothing if not irreverent, and as Orchestra Nazionale Della Luna, the ‘national orchestra of the moon’, suggests they have a Felliniesque flourish about them. Quartet though it may be, the combo has a big, sweeping cinematic sound, well enhanced by squiggly moog lines, breathy wood flute and vaporous melodicism over often crashing acoustic backbeats. Yet the microtonal phrases and ethereal textures also give the music a very meditative character that underlines the sound judgment of the players. The result is a stimulating set of songs that could work as a soundtrack if the right director landed on ONDL’s lunar surface.
