Sheffield-based multi-instrumentalist and Discus label boss, Martin Archer, maintains a dizzyingly prolific output covering a wide range of musical touchstones from free-jazz and improv through to ambient works and affectionate prog homage. This latest offering is somewhat more difficult to peg, but strives for some of the grandeur and pomp of postpsychedelic rock opera. The nearly 14-minute opening track, ‘Star Gathering’, is a mythopoeic gambol flinging together fuzz-bass, a string quartet, Archer's own prancing sopranino saxophone, Terry Rileyinspired rippling keyboards, tribal drums and the sputtering vocal extemporisations of the massed Juxtavoices improvising choir; while ‘Essential Light’ feels like a lost blast of bona fide jazz-rock from back in the day, combining skipping drums, space-age female vocals, late-night electric piano and a modified sax that's a dead-ringer for Karl Jenkins in his later Soft Machine days. Throw in a few cloudy, abstract interludes and tense bursts of group improvisation, and it's yet more proof of Archer's restless imagination and wit.
