Furious debate may rage over what constitutes the best band that Ornette has ever led but this memorable gig undoubtedly has one of the best ever moments produced by his many groups. It is the breakdown on ‘Rock The Clock’, (a highlight of Science Fiction, recorded in the same year as this gig), in which Dewey Redman's tenor and Charlie Haden's fuzzed-out double bass embark on a duet that shifts from the most primal explosions of wah-wah-like funk to a chamber finesse before the equally dramatic entrance of Ornette's trumpet takes the music to another level of lament. The emotional charge is devastating. Thunderous applause tells you all you need to know about the impact the set made on the audience and the impressive audio quality puts the listener right in the frame. A 15-minute take on ‘Street Woman’, also featured on the aforementioned studio album, is another highlight, but it is the consistently ferocious energy of the music, hot-wired by Ed Blackwell's ceaselessly joyful hop-skip-jump drumming that counts.
