A modern-day equivalent of previous Blue Note all-stars projects, notably 2017’s Our Point Of View (Glasper, Akinmusire, Loueke, Scott, Hodge, Strickland). This ensemble has an abundance of talent in the ranks. After all Gerald Clayton, Immanuel Wilkins and Joel Ross have all become festival headliners in recent years and stamp their considerable personalities on the thematic and improvisatory content. That was to be expected, though, so the real questions are ensemble cohesion and composing. Both boxes are convincingly ticked.
The material is very much in the contemporary mould that has salient references to ’Second Great Quintet’ and solo Wayne finesse, from the 1960s to the 2000s, but nonetheless avoids pastiche, partly through a sound world that is well nuanced by Ross’s vibraphone and the supple yet solid rhythmic axis created by drummer Kendrick Scott and bassist Matt Brewer. There are no single tunes that stand out to really make the album a classic but the level of musicianship throughout is sufficiently high to make it a rewarding listen.
