Highly praised for his contributions as guitarist with the Jamil Sheriff Big Band, Jamie Taylor also happens to lecture at the Leeds College of Music where members of Roller Trio and Led Bib have previously benefited from his teaching. For this debut release from his own quartet, he's teamed up with fellow LCM staff members Garry Jackson (bass) and Dave Walsh (drums), as well as grad Matt Anderson (tenor sax), to record two lengthy suites of his own inspiration. Each clocking in at around 20 minutes, ‘Someone New Suite’ and ‘Three Colours: Blues Suite’ show off very different skills and explore starkly contrasting soundscapes. The former, declaring a clear indebtedness to the likes of Paul Motian, has elements of 1970s fusion and prog, while the latter – as its title suggests – offers an alternative perspective on the blues legacy, taking in elements of swing, bop and funk. It's clever, engaging stuff.
