Take the first letter of these musicians’ forenames, place them in reverse order and you get OWL, a combination of two Brits and one American (Lund) making beautiful music together. This tasteful set of unhackneyed jazz standards and thoughtful originals was cut more than two years ago but has finally come to light, much better late than never. Inevitably there’s a chamber-jazz feel to the proceedings, but plenty of deep improvisation and conspicuous musicianship as well. Bonus points must go to Lund, who supplies all the harmonic depth to the session while maintaining a light rhythmic pulse. These technical challenges are nobly met on tracks like ‘I Should Care’, ‘Sweet and Lovely’ and ‘From This Moment On’, with Le Fleming’s basslines beside him every step of the way. As charted elsewhere in this issue (on P47) Vinson can play considerably hotter than he does here, but his relaxed approach is exactly what this session required. Plaudits all round.
