German free-jazz pioneer Peter Brötzmann has been a hero to followers of the more extreme regions of rock since his preposterously loud and abrasive quartet, Last Exit, won over hard-core punks in the late 1980s and early 90s.
Those with ears to hear rightly identified in his playing not just a similar love of volume but a confrontational, take-no-prisoners attitude that’s ensured he’s remained an influence on noise-niks well into the 21st century.
All of which makes this pairing with San Franciscan quartet OXBOW less likely than it might at first appear. Since 1988, they’ve explored an avant-garde conception of noise-rock drawing on free-jazz as much as the blues, channelled through the imposing, muscular presence of frontman Eugene Robinson. As this live performance reveals, they’re a perfect match for the elder tenor man.
From Brötzmann’s opening notes, sliding into a brooding, bluesy rumble, he sounds utterly at home, unleashing a growling lyricism that lifts the razored slide guitar and Robinson’s pained histrionics into stratospheric regions. It’s great to hear Brötzmann clearly enjoying himself – but, even here, he pulls no punches. For every chugging R&B lick there’s a pay-off of molten, altissimo squealing likely to keep fans of his most energetic work satisfied.
