When Denmark’s Roskilde festival commissioned drummer Paal Nilssen-Love to curate two special projects for the event he responded by forming two groups of musicians from different countries, one from Japan and the other from Brazil. As these two gnarly sounding recordings demonstrate, however, the music they play is oblivious to global boundaries and speaks the same sonic language. With Nilssen-Love as the percussive mainspring, his fellow musicians bounce ideas off each other with uninhibited joy and total freedom. Japanese saxophone legend Akira Sakata’s opening salvo on the NJN disc is a rather terrifying thing of beauty, as it shakes loose grimy sheets of improv into the air summoning up Ayler-esque ghosts of New York’s free-jazz loft scene. Equally engrossing is Brazilian electric guitarist Kiko Dinucci’s opening solo for ‘Five Dollars and a Jug of Rum’ on the NBF selection, a muted dragging of strings that becomes entangled in Frode Gjerstad’s warping alto-sax wail before trailing into silence. Both discs have their moments of glory, but it is the Japanese noise session that shines brightest. Embedded with electronic jewels from Pain Jerk’s Kohei Gomi and Hijokaidan luminary Toshiji Mikawa, the set is further reinforced with Dinucci’s explorative guitar and the well-aimed enthusiastic punch of Nilssen-Love’s muscular drum beats. For best results, ignore the genre tags and just luxuriate in the potent energy that emanates from this music.
