With two outstanding musicians from Europe and the Americas – Italian trumpeter Fresu and Cuban pianist Sosa – coming together, there is every chance of real magic, but this is a curiously uneven affair. When the players combine lyricism with a charged chordal framework and whispering percussion, the results are very engaging. Having said that, there is a fine line between focused, delicate poise and a kind of hollow prettiness where the beauty of the timbres cannot mask a lack of narrative substance. This happens once too often and it is sadly compounded by horn lines that are flaccid and cloying, rather than incisive and touching. Also problematic are keyboard sounds that, while atmospheric, are a touch on the bloodless side. The end result is an album that could have made more of the low register gravitas of Jacques Morelenbaum's cello and dropped a few pieces from the 12-track set list. There are thus good moments that don't quite amount to an overarching good moment. It's a case of two accomplished artists in need of a producer equipped with discerning ears and astute editing skills. Where is Cassandra Wilson's great helmsman Craig Street, right now?
