Four years after the release of Alma, a thoughtful, low-key album that enjoyed international critical acclaim, Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu and Cuban pianist Omar Sosa's more ambitious collaboration Eros is a concept album inspired by love and its variations. Cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, who was featured to great effect on Alma rejoins the duo, while the invigorating Alborada string quartet add another dimension to the duo's concepts. Interestingly, the album includes a version of Massive Attack's ‘Teardrop’ and a previously unreleased track by Peter Gabriel and his son called ‘What Lies Ahead’, released with the consent of Gabriel, even though it is apparently slated to be on Gabriel's own upcoming album. There is perhaps more animation and diversity than Fresu and Sosa's previous album, suggestive of artistic growth. Electronic effects are thoughtfully added to shade and colour, while the fact that Morelenbaum recorded his part in Rio de Janeiro and vocalist Natacha Atlas put down her part in Toulouse (reflecting the ease with which sound files can be utilised in service of musical ambition) is not something that detracts from the album's overall effect.
