The follow-up to last year's very impressive eponymous debut. Partikel is a young contemporary jazz three piece with a taste for African, Caribbean-rooted and contemporary grooves, folky melodies and exhilarating changes of gear. They are Duncan Eagles, an exciting, unusually substantial young tenor/soprano saxophonist with a Tomorrow's Warriors and London's Trinity College background (tutors were Jean Toussaint and Mark Lockheart) and Ronnie Scott's regular bassist Max Luthert and drummer Eric Ford. A longrunning residency at Streatham's hip Hideaway jazz club and various live opportunities over the past couple of years have allowed them to develop as a band and the resulting patient interaction, narrative shape and good communication in their improvisations is apparent through this album of originals. There are no chordal instruments as such, but you hardly notice; there's not a dull moment.
