Here's a treat that's emerged from out the shadows. A rarity in that it captures Martino in duo mode, it's a guitar fan's dream in giving us front row seats to not only Martino the long lined and lyrical soloist, all bop technicality yet touched with no little soul, but it also let's us hear Martino, the comping accompanist, a master of sprung rhythm that is a lesson in itself. Recorded live in intimate surroundings, Martino and Ridl, the born-again master and the younger tyro, evidently have a ball, notably on ‘The Phineas Trane’, a riot of rhythm with Ridl all gospel bounce and Martino roogalating away like he's back in an organ trio with Jack McDuff. By contrast, another nod to Coltrane, ‘Naima’, is deliriously relaxed, with Martino content to ease his way through lower and middle registers, revealing a sensual swing that's not always readily to the fore in his studio work.
