March/2018

Dedicated to the memory of Shiroishi’s grandparents, who were incarcerated at the Tule Lake internment camp during WWII, this cassette-only release festers and grouses with the burden of its message, alto and baritone sax unravelling like John Butcher at his most nebulous or Colin Stetson gargling with a yard of wasps. Occasional Klezmer runs and frolicsome bursts of fire music bug out, culminating in a lung-fuelled blast so mighty it’d put the wind up the devil, but finally fatigue, yielding to the poignantly beautiful, but all-too-brief, closing hymnal ‘The Flowers and Candles are Here to Protect Us’.
