A previously unissued concert recorded by Swiss Radio from a less documented period of Bley's activity. He had been notably prolific in terms of trio and solo recordings throughout the 1960s-80s, easing off slightly in the 1990s prior to questioning the need to record at all after being financially enriched by the Canadian National Archive. Another point of interest here is his teaming with Peacock and Motian, for the first time (I think) since 1963-64 – that was when they also recorded with Bill Evans, as well as doing an album with Keith Jarrett in 1992 Naturally, Bley is a lot freer than either pianist and, even when the thematic nuggets are familiar from Bley's earlier repertoire, as in ‘Moor’ or the 11½-minute version of ‘Mazatlán’, they develop organically into unexpected territories. The pianist's quiet sense of humour is noticeable too in his fast version of Ornette's ‘When Will The Blues Leave’, while the solo opening to ‘Flame’ (an out-of-tempo improv based on ‘My Old Flame’) quotes the hook of ‘My Way’ and a couple of others. There's even a possible nod to Jarrett with the gospelly funk of ‘Told You So’, reminding us how much variety Bley could muster by this stage.
