Prolific free-jazz reeds player Paul Dunmall has been known to take a turn on the saxello and Northumbrian pipes but in this trio setting, he limits himself to the more orthodox soprano sax, as well as some lively clarinet and contra bassoon blowing. The results nonetheless fall squarely into the avant-garde category, with some of Dunmall's acoustic interventions sounding as clangorously startling as Mike Ratledge's electric keyboard work with Soft Machine: check the hair-raising first bars of ‘Rooks Parliament’ (where have all the apostrophes flown away to?). Birds are the theme for this set of six pieces. Bearing titles such as ‘Woodland Birds Collective Dream of Other Lives’, ‘The Great Journey with Birds as Guides’ and ‘Highest Migration over the Himalayas’, they're not intended to be immediately digestible but require careful attention to the gritty aerial improvising of the three group members as Neil Metcalfe's flute swoops and soars over Philip Gibbs's guitar, while Dunmall offers up his sonically uncompromising contributions. It all comes to a cacophonously twittering head in the 15-minute-plus closer, ‘The Great Swan Awaits Us’.
