The six sections of Paul Dunmall's The Dreamtime Suite unfold without break from the spritely opening title track to the uplifting sonorities of the closing ‘Sacred Hymn’. In between ‘Warning’ advances through features for brittle trumpet, scale-ripping tenor sax and densely chorded piano. ‘Call an Elephant’ introduces the Dunmall penny whistle and “Frame Drum and Bagpipes”, a feature for Dunmall and Hamid Drake, is just that. In essence, though, this is a free jazz blast that gains impact from being loosely structured by Dunmall's evocative melodies. Each piece changes shape and mood, and each track features strong solos bursting out of upbeat ensembles. Add in the sensitive urgency of Dave Kane and Hamid Drake on bass and drums, and the performance rekindles the fires of the 1960s New Thing. Dunmall always wears the influence of John Coltrane on his sleeve, but here he adds a trace of guttural Archie Shepp to that aesthetic while Pursglove's sharply pointed, angular lines and breathy grumbles are the album's consistent highlight. Combined, the two horns are a force of nature. Tromans, Kane and Drake boil away underneath, add texture and drive to the ebb-and-flow-pulse and are equally assured when they take a lead role. Feels like a great gig.
