This is the third jazz release from British bass player and composer Paul Kimber. Previous discs have drawn on bigger instrumental forces – Peckham in Spring was a sax-led quartet set – but this more intimate collection rises to the challenge of sustaining listener interest despite being restricted to a palette of double bass and piano. It does this partly because Kimber knows how to write a good ear-catching melody line: you’ll be whistling along to the jolly strains of opener ‘Bigfoot’ within seconds, which is just as well because it only lasts just over a minute. Pianist Paul Merriman’s stride stylings might put you in mind of Fats Waller, while the title sounds like a play on ‘Your Feet’s Too Big’; the tune itself could be a mash-up of various Waller- associated numbers. It’s a lovely way to get things started. Second tune ‘Colorado’ introduces bowed work from Kimber, who knows how to get a range of sounds out of his bass; it almost seems to be singing on ‘Bazzled’. Merriman proves a fine duetting – and musical duelling – partner throughout, and the results are consistently engaging.
