Having graduated from Trinity College in 2007, the alto and soprano saxophonist/composer Paul Riley's debut features a quintet that he formed in 2011 out of London's hotbed of emerging young jazz talent. It's a collection of his coolly propulsive contemporary mainstream jazz originals echoing something of the influence of Pat Metheny, as well leaning towards breezily latin and Brazilianinfluenced post-bop playing. Riley has a warm tone and knows how to move eloquently through the changes. The quintet features the guitarist Ant Law (Tim Garland, Jason Rebello), bassist Matt Ridley, the impressive Ivo Neame ensemble drummer Dave Hamblett and the pianist Mitch Jones, who engages the listener with his solos here. It's encouraging to know there are still young graduates like Paul Riley patiently digging into the old traditions, with the ultimate aim of carving out their own personal voice.
