Once during a conversation with Stan Getz I asked him why he seldom included any original compositions on his albums. Getz didn't even pause, before replying. “No need to with so many great tunes out there. Gershwin, Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, Rodgers & Hart, Michel Legrand, Eddie Sauter and all those Brazilians the list is endless. Far too many players think that they can only prove themselves by writing their own material,” he continued, “only a few can do that with any real success – Horace Silver can, and is a fine example. I can't, my strength is as an interpreter. And I haven't done too bad over the years!” It's something that musicians like Pete Magadini understand. During the 1970s Messers Magadini, Downes and Young were an integral part of the Canadian jazz community, which included working with numerous American visitors. Here they were joined by grandstanding tenor man Don Menza whose robust stance has fired up the big bands of Louie Bellson, Buddy Rich and Maynard Ferguson. Relying mostly on non-originals, highlights include romps through a couple of Miles Davis mainstays ‘Freddie Freeloader ‘ (two takes) and ‘Solar’.
