Malinverni is something of a veteran, not only as a New York-based mainstream jazz pianist, but also as composer and college educator. Only the former is on display here, in a programme of mostly familiar material which it’s implied is inspired by Malinverni’s meeting, and being praised by, Bernstein many moons ago. It may also be timed to coincide with the release of the Spielberg take on West Side Story. Some of the repertoire here was apparently previously performed live with Joe Lovano but, in these trio arrangements, the approach is fairly straight-ahead, apart perhaps from playing the fast waltz ‘I Feel Pretty’ in 5/4. To be fair, there are only three songs from West Side Story, along with a couple from On The Town, including the lovely ‘Some Other Time’ and ‘Lonely Town’ which was cut from that show’s 1949 film version, and a surprise choice perhaps is ‘Simple Song’ from Bernstein’s ‘Mass’. Malinverni’s accompaniment by the equally veteran Hamilton is excellent, often on brushes, while Okegwo is firm in support and in the occasional solo.
