Originally from New York and busy around town, DiCarlo moved to Izmir, Turkey, three years ago and now works there with this quartet. This second album claims to move on from traditional jazz and to meld fusion with Turkish influences; that may be so, but the initial effect on the striking title track is one of Big Apple intensity married to a free-flowing percussive underlay, the alto strident and strong, piano and drums full-on.
All seven compositions are DiCarlo’s, the performances mostly short and probably geared to radio play, their variety illustrating his talent for creating nifty yet evocative themes. ‘Yesterday’s Tomorrow’ is calmer, sinuous almost, the serpentine lines echoing middle-eastern traditions, ‘Do Dat’ has the kind of bluesy, soulful approach that makes this listener think DiCarlo may have heard Cannonball Adderley’s more funky recordings and absorbed his solo approach.
This track also highlights pianist Kivaner’s most striking solo. ‘Little Footsteps’ is another engaging piece, the group settling into swing, its structure designed to catch DiCarlo’s daughter’s early progress. If David Sanborn combined with Cannonball’s bluesy side is your preference, then give DiCarlo a listen. I might have preferred rather more of the title track’s vibrancy and improvisatory
