Reminiscent of Partikel, say, but with double, er, double bass, Double Trouble Live calls to mind the various other twin (quadruple?) bass precedents in 1960s free jazz. The stripped-down setting puts a lot of pressure on the sax, which dominates by necessity; Ehwald, best known in this country as co-leader of Paragon, is more or less up to the challenge but it doesn't always make for the most varied album. The rhythm section, though, play with gymnastic grace and fluidity, clearly enjoying the absence of piano or guitar or even other horns. They're good, too: Landfermann, for instance, has worked with Joachim Kühn, John Scofield, Lee Konitz, Django Bates and Tomasz Stanko. As a pair, the bassists could perhaps have done even more – like, to take a more contemporary example, John Edwards and Daniel Sailer in Phall Fatale – but these pieces, all live recordings, are still highly enjoyable.
