One of the most notable but relatively short-lived piano trios of the 1990s was an all-star British-Swedish-American affair. There were three CDs on ECM already under their belt by the time of Juni, their final album together that's now been re-released as part of ECM's smart series of digi-sleeve reissues. On paper a ‘piano’ trio, in reality a collective planting seeds and organically twisting them as a collective into shapes where ideas are given time to breathe. Erskine is painterly and percussive, while Danielsson's wholesome tone provides the glue and Taylor is on majestic form, with the influence of his idol Bill Evans coming to the fore on occasion. Tunes are written mostly by Taylor and Erskine, aside from Kenny Wheeler's ‘For Jan’, and the final track ‘Namasti’ written by Diana Taylor, John's wife at the time. It's a genuine climax to the recording, with the pianist's solo finding him in an expressively sublime moment. Juni is probably the most freely conversational of the four collaborations, and in many ways the most magical.
