Pete Jacobsen may be the best jazz pianist you never heard of. An incredibly shy man, but once sat at a keyboard the music just flowed through him. I saw him once with Don Rendell playing ‘My Foolish Heart’; Pete finished his solo, Don pointed towards him and said: “World class, ladies and gentleman. World class.” That gig didn't get recorded but listen to ‘South Ghost’ with Chris Biscoe or Pete's Jarrett-like solo performance, recorded on tour with Bobby Wellins and if the chills don't run down your spine, you've got a problem. I'm tempted to suggest that Pete is the other truly great pianist that Bobby Wellins worked with. He's nothing like Stan Tracey but he and Wellins were perfect together. In fact, there was something about Pete that seemed to bring out the best in even the very best like Wellins, Biscoe and Peter King, whose playing on ‘Windows’ is just sublime. Don't expect pristine hi-fion every track. Some of the recordings are good bootleg quality at best, but even with that caveat this is one of the best archive releases of the year.
