This follow-up to his 2013 debut One Way Ticket To Palookaville sees vocalist Peter Jones pick up where he left off, with another eclectic track list, ear-catching arrangements and an A-list band. Jones transforms the familiar rhythmic lilt of Donald Fagen’s ‘Maxine’ into an up-tempo barnstormer featuring a brilliant solo from Angilley. There’s more gorgeous soloing from Lowther and Price on ‘It Could Happen To You’. Following the nods to film in the debut (‘The Long Goodbye’ and ‘I Beg Your Pardon’), Jones pens new lyrics to another 1970s noir classic, ‘Love Theme From Chinatown’. It’s the first of three tunes to which the singer appends lyrics, the second taking Wes Montgomery’s live take on Coltrane’s ‘Impressions’ as a jumping-off point (dazzling guitar work here from Price), the third the title track of Freddie Hubbard’s 1973 album Sky Dive, in which Jones channels Mark Murphy to impressive effect.
