The son of Brazilian MPB legend Baden Powell de Aquino – one of South America's most celebrated guitarists and guitar composers – Philippe Baden Powell made the piano his instrument of choice, leaving his guitarist brother Louis Marcel Powell to get on with emulating their dad. Stints in Paris, Germany and Rio, along with some heavy international touring as a musical family unit, has nurtured a penchant for collaboration and experimentation; here he teams up with the intriguing likes of prolific Belgian jazz vocalist David Linx – a vivid presence on the English-language title track – to craft an album that takes Brazilian jazz in a direction it has needed to go. Smart, fluid, infinitely spiritual, tracks such as ‘Vamos Donatear’ (a tribute to Joao Donato), the silky ‘For You To Know’ and sweet voiced, Blue Note-vibed closer ‘State of Music’ are a joy to listen to, buoyed by subtle melodies, deft instrumental flourishes and always, Baden Powell's exquisite piano technique.
