Pilc's trio came together in 1996, and their two album set Together: Live at the Sweet Basil suggested a group of enormous potential. Pilc can be explosive, communicating great energy and on some tracks of this 20-track set he appeared to be within touching distance of becoming a major name in contemporary jazz. Yet somehow he has failed to realise his full potential. A series of albums on the late Francis Dreyfus’ label produced some remarkable moments, but tucked away in album-length statements such moments were spread a little thin. So in many ways, this album tells us what we already know about Pilc; split 50-50 between originals and jazz standards (‘Nardis’, ‘Afro Blue’, ‘Giant Steps’, ‘A Foggy Day’, etc) allows him to extend himself on a wide range of material and the results are a little uneven. Maturity has lent his playing a more considered, less frenetic approach, and although this ensemble has a well attuned group ethic they still stand on the threshold of realising their full potential.
