Any project that features Mary Halvorson is well worth a listen, but Joe Morris is, in truth, the central figure here. The guitarist collaborated with Saft (a John Zorn associate who has also worked with Japanese noisenik Merzbow) on 2011's XYX and 2013's Slobber Pup, while Lightcap and Cleaver have worked as his rhythm section since the 1990s. Halvorson, meanwhile, is Morris' former student. These three tracks, varying in length from 13 minutes to almost half an hour, are entirely improvised, with nothing so much as discussed in advance. The method proves highly effective: ‘Manomet’, for instance, begins tentatively with the subtlest of atmospherics; 13 minutes later, it has snowballed into a solid wall of guitar skronk. Four minutes after that, following some Jimmy- Smith-meets-Mike-Ratledge organ, we're becalmed again. The port resonance of the title seems apt: Plymouth is oceanic in its unpredictable combination of lulling beauty and colossal power.
