Avant-garde tenorist Nachoff comes from Toronto, Canada. He is equally at home with jazz and contemporary classical music and his work is aimed at the ground between the two. As for the album's title, his vision asserts that, ‘the state of flux can represent shape-shifting invention rather than uncertainly’. The line-up comprises the ever-searching David Binney (whose label this is on), the multi-keyboard protagonist Matt Mitchell from the Dave Douglas and Rudresh Mahanthappa groups and drummer Wollesen, who works with bands like the Sex Mob as well as people like Bill Frisell and John Zorn. The two saxophonists work well together, using tension and counterpoint and often rising to atonal heights on some tunes, several of which were originally written for classical ensembles, but here adapted for bass-less quartet. The opening rocky ‘Tightrope’ is followed by the intriguing ‘Complementary Opposites’, which includes a nice bit of reggae groove, and comes from nowhere in the middle.
Possibly the most appealing track is ‘Astral Echo Poem’ (an anagram of Hermeto Pascoal, name of the Brazilian composer). A brave and enterprising attempt to come up with something different.
